This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Relax, Relate and Release. Stress management is essential to adult life, but it is also essential to children. To tackle the day and to reach our goals we must employ skills that help us manage our emotions and relate to the world with empathy and confidence.

My students are bright, creative and dealing with a number of issues that impact their ability to learn.

Ninety-five percent of them receive free and reduced priced lunch and are economically disadvantaged. A growing number of our students are first generation immigrants just learning to speak English and many will be the first in their families to pursue college if not the first to graduate high school altogether.

My Project

I'm asking for yoga mats, stress balls and support materials to facilitate mindfulness lessons and easy yoga workshops during advisory lessons and during lunch and learns. These sessions serve as a part of social emotional learning. "Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships..." It is imperative that our students learn how to manage their emotions and stress in an environment that is hostile to their growth and success. We hope that by facilitating these workshops students will be more apt to remain focused, motivated and happy.

Our students live in an economically depressed area and don't have access to meditation workshops or yoga classes.

They are essentially classed out of these useful tools for life management , but by providing these materials we can close the emotional learning gap. Through yoga and meditation we can give students tools to combat stress and negativity while also building confidence and self-awareness.
