Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are hungry for the knowledge of fitness. They work hard with the lack of materials that we are able to provide at our school. It is hard to get them where they want to be physically because we are limited in supplies and space. We work so hard and get it done with what we have. NO EXCUSE!
My students are beautiful.
They come from all different ethnic backgrounds but predominately Hispanic and African American. We are a Title I school which will qualify if 40% of the school is low income....WE ARE 98% low income! We are a charter school that provide high quality education for free. We are placed in one of the toughest areas in the DFW yet the children that walk through our halls strive for the ultimate goal of going to college. Most students in our school will be the first in their family to graduate and attend college. The passion for education and a better life for themselves is unreal! All of our students are motivated to make something of themselves and to be the best they can be. As normal we have tough days but for me in Physical Education, my students want to learn, they want to be healthy and they want to change their families lives. The hunger for the knowledge of health and fitness is through the roof!
My Project
Imagine a cafeteria, we currently do not have a gym, with fitness stations. Kettle bells in one corner, jump ropes in another corner, speed ladders on one side an balance balls on the other. Imagine 60 children working their hardest to improve their health. I want to create a safe space for the children to do body weight exercises that they can bring to their homes. If I can show them how to be healthy without stepping foot into a membership club gym I will be able to show them how to be healthy and take care of themselves for the rest of their lives. My students have 90 minute classes and everyday we dedicate at least 45 minutes of that time to fitness then we reflect in journals and move on to a health lesson that focuses on the food they are putting in their bodies. I want to change their world and I want to end childhood obesity one student at a time. My students need jump ropes, speed hurdles, medicine balls, agility ladders and all equipment that will help them with fitness levels to bring down childhood obesity. Physical Education and Health class is one of the most important classes for the youth.
This class and this project will teach them how to take care of themselves and live healthier lifestyles every single day of their life. This project will also help motivate the parents to turn their lives around and to help their families live a healthier lifestyle. The obesity rate is at its all time high especially in low income areas like ours. We can do this together as a school and a community.
More than half of students from low‑income households
