My Students

My 130 eighth grade students are a very diverse group that loves reading a lot of different books. Over one-third is currently reading below grade level and ten percent are English Language Learners. They read best when given ample time to read in a quiet and comfortable environment. Our library is a great resource for books, but is being utilized for many group projects and innovative work, so it is not a great place to sit and read.

Since I am teaching reading, I would really like to enhance my classroom with flexible seating so that it is more conducive to being a comfortable and quiet reading area.

My Project

This project will make a difference in my students' learning because it will help provide motivation. Most middle school students will read if given the time and space. I hate to see my students squirming in their seats, trying to get comfortable when given the time to read.

Reading stamina improves when students can find a comfortable place to read.

I currently have a few comfortable places for students to sit, and those are always the most sought out places in my room. It is my goal that all students who enter my room can find a comfortable, quiet place to sit and read.
