Micro Worlds!

My students need 5 microscopes to study plant and animal cells as well as small organisms in the study of food chains and metamorphosis.

My Students

When was the first time you got to use a telescope at school? It's always the most exciting day in class, but my students have, for the most part, never even seen a microscope.

We are a Title 1 school in rural Tennessee.

We are a small community school and more than half of our students receive free and reduced lunch. They are hard working, diverse students with many special needs and many of them struggle to imagine a life beyond our community.

My Project

With a set of real microscopes, my science classes will be not only more excited and intrigued by the natural world, they will also be inspired to think beyond the borders of their community. I hope to inspire future scientists and world leaders! Students will not just see a picture or a video of a cell- they'll see one- on a microscope slide that they loaded! When students can take ownership of the supplies and materials they are using, they learn so much more. A study of cells and metamorphosis using these microscopes will go much beyond the typical video-and-worksheet business of elementary science classes!

Microscopes may not seem like much in the way of inspiration, but the wonder that will be created by experiencing and creating learning with their own tools will be priceless.

My goal is for them to not only see the microscopes as a fun way to learn about cells in 4th grade, but also as a possible future career or area of study for themselves.
