Mrs. Brunson from Brooklyn Park, MN is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. Brunson is requestingMy students need intervention activities like fraction bars and circles and place value blocks, a rolling storage cart, hands-on manipulatives like Magna Tiles and Unifix Cubes.

Memorization is difficult for students who come to school with home and community concerns flooding their heads. Students need the opportunity to have fun while learning and dig deep into the concepts. It is vital for students to understand the "why" and process behind each mathematical concept.
I work at a low-income community school.
Many of my students come from the apartment buildings surrounding our school. We are the #1 school in our district for homeless students and our student population is quite transient. Having a stable, safe school environment is key to a successful educational experience. Students come to school talking about being kicked out of their homes, not eating dinner, or how they are worried for their family because of the shooting at their apartment building last night.
I work with students 1:1 and in small groups to help them gain the foundational math skills they are missing to be successful with grade level curriculum. Many students are at least 1 grade level behind and are missing the background knowledge to make the new concepts stick. The students I work with are in a process in which they have been identified as struggling and have shown little to no progress over an extended period of time. Family support looks different at our school as many times they do not have the educational background to support their child academically. As a school, we work as a team to help these children succeed. These students who are not making progress, work with me as a way for me to figure out if they have the capability of learning or have some type of learning disability. I do believe that the students I work with have the capability to master mathematical skills with the proper techniques and skill building.
Donating to this project will help students who do not have the opportunity to use real-world manipulatives to understand math.
I want to take these students' knowledge of math to a deeper level. I hope to build the necessary foundational concepts in each of the students I work with so that they do not become a student who ends up in the Special Education classroom. I believe in these kids and just need the resources to help make the teaching possible!
