My students need prismacolor markers for the projects we do in commercial art. Due to budget cuts, I've stopped buying markers and have had to change the projects we do.

Using available materials and working within a budget has always been a source of pride for me. Unfortunately this has an adverse affect on the quality of work being done in my commercial art class. The prismacolor markers I have left since I stopped buying them several years ago are barely working.
My students are hard working, motivated students.
While they rarely lament about not having the best materials, given the opportunity to use quality products, they almost always will turn out quality products. They take very seriously the work that they do in the art room, and almost always strive to do their best.
My Project
In the past we used prismacolor markers for a few projects. One of those is called the "Three Media" project. Students pick a product and illustrate that product using three different media. Their current choices are pen, pencil, colored pencil and cut paper.
Preceding this project, I would typically take a day or two and teach the entire class how to use marker to illustrate a product. In many areas of graphic design and illustration, marker work is still standard and accepted practice. Because we don't have a good variety of working markers, students choices are limited and the resulting project is not what it could be.
When we start this project, students review and critique past student work. They inevitably get to see work done in marker and the positive affect it has on the final project.
The projects and students will be positively affected because of the broader array of choices they will have, and because they'll learn to use a media most never have before.
Working with markers is different from anything the students have used previously. It enhances their understanding of how to create value, as well as how to affect the viewer and the artwork with the placement of color and the use of contrast.
I know students have been negatively impacted by not having access to markers.
