My Students

Manga, Manga, Mangia, Mangia truly describes how manga is used in our library - it is "devoured" by our "manga-hungry" students! "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." - Maya Angelou

My students come from working-class, immigrant families.

We have a very large population of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. As the teacher librarian at my own alma mater, I have seen an insatiable desire from hundreds of my students here in terms of adding to our old, somewhat outdated Library collection. My suggestion box at the circulation counter is filled with requests, most notably for more manga. Many of our students either do not have the funds to just go out and buy books, or do not have the time or transportation to get to our local public libraries. Therefore, our school library is an integral resource for our students. And boy, do they use our library! We have upwards of 50-100 students in here every day at lunch and after school, not to mention other times throughout the day.

My Project

Hundreds, if not thousands, of our students on campus will check out these new manga titles from our Library. I like to call "manga" the great equalizer - I have students from all ranges of abilities who love to read these popular books. From my most severely learning disabled students who love to look at the pictures in the books, to my Advanced Placement students who find these titles convenient for a quick read in between studying for their advanced courses, to my English Language Development students who use these books to practice reading in English, I witness ALL students at our school gravitating to our small manga section. I am requesting more manga titles to fulfill their requests, as well as build up our currently small (but hopefully growing) graphic novel section.

Our students will be well-served by these new titles here in the Library, as all students will have access to these books, and any student who is interested will be able to check them out of the Library.

In my past experience as a teacher librarian, most manga titles change hands (or circulate) at least a few times a week. I am confident that adding these titles to our Library will benefit all of our students by giving them more options, as manga appeals to all levels and abilities.
