Non-fiction texts are important for students to read. Magazines published for kids allow students to read non-fiction texts that are interesting to them. They are age-appropriate and give students the practice needed to improve their skills in reading non-fiction texts.
My students live in a rural part of the country.
Many come from poverty stricken home lives. Less than 50% of the students are reading on grade level. Despite their home lives and their deficits, they come to school with a positive attitude.
My third graders are very eager to become better readers this year. We work really hard on improving our reading skills all year long. We take part in the Daily 5 program which has shown great improvement.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of children's magazines that my students can use to practice their skills with reading non-fiction texts. These magazines will be added to our classroom collection of texts to choose from for reading during Daily 5. Students will be able to learn more about the world around them.
By having these magazines students will learn how to read a magazine to learn information about specific topics. This is an important skill that they will need to be successful in life. They will also learn how to read non-fiction texts, another important skill needed to be successful.
This project is important because it allows the students to be exposed to non-fiction texts that they may not be exposed to elsewhere.
The magazines will make using non-fiction texts enjoyable for the students! We cannot do it without your help!
