Mad Scientists Explore

My students need science tools such as a First Experiments Magnetism Set, an Exploring Wind & Water Energy K'NEX Set, and a Weather Tracker to study weather and seasons, simple machines and forces/motion, and storage containers to stay organized.

My Students

How many of you remember your second grade science lessons? My dream for my students is for them to love science and remember what they learned. This year we will be exploring many exciting things in class. We'll study weather, seasons, forces, simple machines, and even living creatures.

My students are the most exciting group of seven, eight, and nine year-olds that you could ever meet.

All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch, so life can be hard. My job as their teacher is to provide them with a safe place where they can live and learn. We love all kinds of things. Some students are into reading and writing while others prefer science and math. Our school is quite unique. We learn about subjects at each grade level, as well as Spanish, Physical Education, Music, and perhaps next year Art. We have a large population of Spanish speaking children. Our goal is to have students be bilingual by the end of their time at our school. It is truly an environment of growth. We reach for the stars. The best part is sometimes we get there!

My Project

These resources will help me bring science to life! Let me explain some of the things we can do with your help: 1) Weather center and activities: monitor the daily weather just like local news personalities! We don't have to study weather in a textbook. We can even study tornadoes with the tornado kit without having to live through one. 2) Ant farm: study the impact of ants on the environment first-hand! 3) Levers/Pulleys kit: explore simple machines and force using hands-on activities. We will discover what "force" really means and ways to make "work" easier. Make physical science real! 4) Magnet kit: see how magnets really work. Ask and answer questions about the forces inside! 5) Storage boxes: keep our science journals and equipment organized! Basically, I have to re-do my entire science curriculum this year. I need supplies to help students learn three basic units: physical science, earth and space science, and life science.

At our school, we do not have very many resources provided to us.

Therefore, in order to make my teaching reach its maximum potential, I need some help. The supplies I have requested will make a huge difference in how I can approach science this year. I won't have to stand up in front of the room and read from a book; the students can actually experience science. They can ask questions and find the answers through true discovery. I can't wait to see it!
