See what Mrs. Johnson is requestingMy students need science lab supplies such as beakers, test tubes, and thermometers. They also need Consumer Chemistry: Science in the Kitchen and lab kits, such as Zometool DNA Kit, Culture Cube Kit, Owl Pellet Kit, DNA Starter Kit, Science Car Kits, and Frog Hatchery Kit, to improve their understanding of basic science lab concepts.

A typical day is my science classroom is usually fun and exciting. I would like to add to that excitement by being able to conduct hands-on, science lab activities.
I teach teens with special needs.
Our school is a small setting for children with behavioral and emotional disabilities. Each classroom setting only has 8 students in each class. Our school embraces the philosophy that all students can learn new behaviors, new coping skills, and master the North Carolina Standard Course of Study at the same time. Teachers are encouraged to use a variety of teaching techniques and strategies all while meeting student’s individual needs. We have the freedom to modify the content through the process by which we deliver the content and the ability to recognize our student’s individual readiness for the content that we are exploring.
My students need science lab supplies, such as beakers, test tubes, and thermometers. They also need Consumer Chemistry: Science in the Kitchen and lab kits, such as Zometool DNA Kit, Culture Cube Kit, Owl Pellet Kit, DNA Starter Kit, Science Car Kits, and Frog Hatchery Kit. With these materials, I plan to engage my students in activities that they have never experienced before. Due to these students being placed in a separate classroom setting, there are many science activities, such as chemical reactions, that they have never been exposed to. Students in a hands-on science program will remember the material better, feel a sense of accomplishment when the task is completed, and be able to transfer that experience easier to other learning situations. When more than one method of learning is accessed as in hands-on learning, the information has a better chance of being stored in the memory for useful retrieval. Students who have difficulty in the learning arena for reasons of auditory deficiencies or behavioral interference can be found to be on task more often because they are part of the learning process and not just spectators. My students will learn how to conduct science experiments, how to dissect organisms, and how basic chemical reactions work.
My project will make a difference because we will be learning how to save energy, care for our environment, analyze scientific data, and design/conduct science experiments.
My students have never been exposed to science labs, and this is something that they are looking forward to participating in.
