Living History in Someone Else's Shoes

My students need "gas masks", nuts and bolts, and line formation signs to simulate trench warfare, the assembly line/industrialization, and Ellis Island immigration.

My Students

When students enter my history classroom they get an experience rather than a lecture. I want them to retain what they have learned and understand the significance of the content, so they can apply it to our world today. I want my students to walk out of the door with a love of history and learning.

In suburban Idaho we have limited cultural experiences available and an abundant desire to learn about our country and world.

Our high school is full of students who thirst to dig deeper and develop a complex understanding of material. We also have a variety of options for core classes which allow students to specialize in their own interests. While we are fortunate to have the population we do, our resources are not as abundant.

My Project

After conducting simulations in my classroom this year I am thrilled with the results I have seen. Students asked daily, "Do we get to do a simulation today?" I also saw tremendous retention in essays and exams regarding content covered in simulations. Students will first recreate the experience of Ellis Island. I give students a character card which assigns them a home country, occupation, etc... They go through the various steps that existed at Ellis Island at the turn of the century, playing the role of their character. The multiple stops became confusing in a small classroom. The line formation stands will allow students to maintain order. Students will also experience the assembly line as factory workers. The nuts, bolts and washers will be used to show them how mundane assembly line work is and I will act as a ruthless supervisor. Students will complete a trench warfare simulation and wear gas masks while completing challenging tasks, taking notes, & facing simulated obstacles.

When students are allowed to "live" the past rather than just hearing about it they become more invested in learning.

After each simulation we hold a classroom discussion on why this event or period of time is significant to our nation's history and how it is applicable today. They walk away thinking about what needs to happen in today's world. Planting that seed of thought allows unbridled potential.
