My Students

Some of my students still have difficulties making connections with certain math concepts. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with math and reading! Having the right book to help make the connection is one step closer to achieving math success.

Students in my class live in a rural East Tennessee town.

They come from families where they will most likely be a first generation high school graduate. My job is to prepare them for that special day even as early as fifth grade. Our school is a Title One school that has almost 75% of students who are free and reduced lunch. Our obstacles are many but we strive to help all of students reach for their highest academic level.

My Project

Materials I am requesting are books about math concepts such as; prime numbers, graphing and mapping skills. My students will be able to use Math Literature and supplies (graph paper, wipe boards and markers) to learn and practice required math concepts. My students can use non-fiction books about sports to see that math is used in a variety of organized sports fields they may not have considered. Learning about Eratosthenes helps students see how geography and other subjects are closely related. Having these resources, my students will be able to do more group activities and this will encourage team building and cooperative learning. Students will use the Math Literature to gain a broader understanding of identifying prime numbers, of how math is used in our everyday lives, and how to graph ordered pairs on a coordinate graph. My hope is that my students will not only develop as math students but they will understand the importance of the relationship between reading and math.

Donating to this project will help my students become successful in math and reading but more importantly successful in life.

Having these books and manipulatives, my students will be one step closer to accomplishing this goal. I am trying to help my students obtain their highest levels of accomplishment because their are not just students to me they are my future.
