Listening Centers and Chair Pockets to Foster Independence

My students need 7 portable CD players for independent story listening centers during reading time, and 24 chair pockets to store and have easy access to their leveled books.

My Students

Every morning begins with smiles and our classroom chant: Kids-"I am a genius and I'm ready to learn today. My family believes in me. My teachers believe in me. I believe in myself. Someday I'm going to college. I am Someone! I am important!" Me-"Do you believe it?" Kids -"Yes!" Me-"Good! I do too."

My Kindergarten students are an amazing group of children who come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds.

More than 3/4 of my class are English Language Learners who speak other languages at home. In our classroom there is a total of eight different languages that are spoken! The children come to school every morning with big smiles on their faces, eager to learn and see their friends. Our school is a Title I community school just outside of North Minneapolis. Over 80% of our students are considered students of color and 80% qualify for free and reduced lunch. A majority of our students have not had the opportunity to be read to at home every day and have very limited access to books and materials that can help increase their literacy skills.

My Project

During reading time in my classroom, students rotate independently through different reading stations. One of these is "Listen to Reading" in which they pick a book to listen to on a tape or CD with their headphones. Listening to reading helps a child gain fluency and helps encourage their love for certain kinds of books. Having individual CD players would allow them to choose books that they are interested in or to listen to recordings of stories being read aloud in their first languages. Also during our daily reading block, students must have access to the books that are at their independent level or that we are practicing in small groups. We don't have a lot of space in our classroom for 21 book boxes, so having chair pockets on the backs of their seats would be convenient and helpful.

These materials would help create more opportunities in my classroom to differentiate literacy skills for my students because they all learn at different rates and in different ways.

I am continually working to create a safe space for them to feel supported as they learn to take risks and make those inevitable mistakes. Providing these smiley, happy faces in my classroom with a richer variety of tools and materials will help and encourage them as they become lifelong readers. Thank you.
