"Eating is not merely a material pleasure. Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship. It is of great importance to the morale" - Elsa Schiaparelli.
When students are running on empty the joy of life is not reachable.
Our school is a public school located in downtown Brooklyn.
Our school is filled with a wonderful group of energetic teenagers from all parts of the world. Our classrooms are filled with born and raised Brooklynites as well as recent immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa.
Most of my students are coming from households that are considered to be below the poverty line. Many are coming from immigrant backgrounds don't feel comfortable reaching out to strangers for support.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are simple, basic life essentials that every human needs to properly function. My students need food for their homes.
When I walk to my school each morning I see bunches of kids at school an hour early. One might think that these kids are just very excited about school, but in reality these kids are waiting for the cafeteria doors to open so they can have what they call "free free" our school's free breakfast.
Many students only meals of the day are what they are served at school and they come to school hungry. While I am so genuinely happy that our school is able to provide this service to my students, it makes me genuinely concerned about what they are able to eat or not eat when we have weekends and longer breaks.
The food that has been requested will be used to supplement what their families are able to provide. Students health, well-being and ability to learn will be greatly impacted daily.
This project will make a dramatic difference for my students and educators in my school.
By providing healthy food for my students, they will become healthier and they will be able to be in school more often. Their focus in class will be better and on the weekends and breaks, they will be able to truly focus on their education rather than the rumblings of their stomachs.
