Help my early childhood students love the library! Preschool and Pre-K students visit the library for 45 minutes each week. They love read-alouds, but they need more variety in their library experience. I want to create centers to allow my students to experience and create stories in different ways.
My students live in the District of Columbia, where libraries don't get a budget from the district.
Our Early Childhood department has just under 100 students attending full-day preschool and Pre-K Our 3- and 4-year old students are so excited about school and about visiting the library, but 45 minutes is too long for little ones to sit still and listen to stories. To really appreciate the library, they need the chance to move around and create! By creating centers in the library, we can meet together as a group for a story, then they can explore the areas for which they feel most passionate.
My Project
I'm planning to create four centers in the library: a puppet theater that will allow the students to tell their own stories; a feltboard station where the students can use the pieces to re-tell familiar stories; a listening station where a group of students can listen to a story while having their own copy of the book; and an art center where they can create art related to the story we've read that day.
I have the materials for the art center, but to create the rest of the centers, I need a larger collection of feltboard stories, puppets and a puppet theater, and many of the materials for creating a listening center.
I want my students to love the library, and I also want them to be able to express themselves creatively through storytelling.
It's important to me that they see the library not only as a place to find great books, but also to create their own stories and express their ideas. These materials will help me create a more dynamic environment for my students.
