My students need 5 tuned outdoor tubano drums to create our school district's very first Harmony Garden. Students will create music and garden in the same outdoor space.

"Let us take our children seriously! Everything else follows from this... only the best is good enough for a child." Zoltan Kodaly, famous for his music method, believed that every child needs the best. By providing my students with an outdoor learning environment, students will grow their minds.
"We Believe" is the theme of our school this year.
A vast majority of my students come from low socioeconomic apartments/homes and therefore, may not have access to an outdoor learning environment. As a result, they do not have the same experiences as other students.
Along with our large student population who come from low socioeconomic housing, my school has a large community of students who are special learners. This population consists of many students who have learning and physical disabilities and various spectrum disorders.
With a total enrollment around 790 students, my partner teacher and I believe that every child can learn, and it is our responsibility to see the potential in every child and teach every child. We believe that there is a "David" (Michelangelo's David statue) in every child. As teachers, it is our job to sculpt away and teach every child every day. Our kids are polite and kind students who are simply looking for someone to love them and teach them.
My Project
I am requesting a set of tuned outdoor musical tubanos to become the centerpiece for my school's Outdoor Harmony Garden. Students will be able to go to the garden to learn about communal gardening, and we will also use the musical space to have outdoor performances that are connected with to the sights and sounds we see in the garden.
With these musical instruments that I am requesting, we will be able to incorporate musical improvisation to our outdoor classroom. They will learn how to express themselves in an outdoor setting with a set of musical instruments that will allow them the freedom to improvise without the anxiety and stress of being wrong. I want to teach students that when you create in music, there is no wrong answer. I want students to know that they can freely create and express themselves using these outdoor instruments.
By combining this musical instrument into our proposed garden space, students will be able to become surrounded in an outdoor learning environment that is multi-sensory and engaging for all students!
