This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are excited every year at the prospect of using their imagination while having fun in art class. As Albert Einstein stated "Imagination is intelligence having fun"
I teach at a beautiful school in North Miami Beach.
It is a title I which means it receives federally supported funds due to the low income level of the community. Over 90% of the student population is considered high risk.
Most of my students do not have the resources at home to experiment with art-like materials. Their parents are hard working families who mostly are first generation immigrants.
My Project
With enough paper, glue and markers, the possibilities are endless. For starters we are going to create paper molas to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in September. We will need lots of colorful papers to cut into animal shapes like turtles, birds or fish. Than the pieces will be glued. Finally markers will be used to decorate the art works.
This year again as for the past five years, my first greeting from the school's secretary was "We have no money to order your art materials!" Yet the show must go on and my students' needs do not change.
In order for my art curriculum to be properly executed I need basic art materials such as those listed here. It is amazing to see what the kids can create with only a few sheets of colored paper and markers. Please help me give to my students the gift of meaningful art experiences.
