Have you ever been to the Zoo? Most of my third graders haven't. We have started a zoo project that gives my kids the chance to learn about zoos from every angle, using math, science, and writing skills that they've learned throughout the year! We just need some supplies to bring it to life!
My third graders are amazing and our school is a true oasis.
My students are growing up in extreme poverty in one of the most violent neighborhoods in the state. For most of them, they don't get to experience life outside of our neighborhood. They entered third grade drastically behind their peers at other schools. Many of my students are facing obstacles the rest of us couldn't dream of. Despite their many challenges, my kids have worked hard throughout the year and I have watched them transform from reluctant mathematicians to inquisitive students. A couple of weeks ago I asked my students who had been to the zoo before. Only a few of my roughly 45 students raised their hands. I have started a project with my kids that will allow them to learn about the Zoo, animals, jobs, etc. and will require them to use all kinds of writing and math skills - and we hope to take a field trip to the zoo to bring it full circle!
My students will use the materials I've requested (colored pencils, pencil sharpener, and glue sticks) to create their zoo projects! This project requires so many elaborate pieces to be created by the student that we just can't make it happen without these simple supplies. My kids need these specific items so that they can create neat, colorful, and beautiful posters, brochures, zoo blue prints, and more that they can be proud of!
Simply put, our school is severely under-resourced and we simply don't have basic supplies that we need to function on a day to day basis.
Still, my students have worked so hard and are so excited about this project that I want them to be able to look at their creations and see a product that makes them proud and excited. This project will make a huge difference for my kids because it will help build their confidence and spark their creativity while emphasizing the importance of teamwork!
