My Students

This project is for the classroom doodlers. It's for those who enjoy storytelling but would prefer to do it through pictures rather than words.

My school on the south side of Chicago is a Title 1 school.

Over 90% of the students are minorities and over 75% of the students are low income. My students are anything but the falsely stereotyped urban student body, however. I often have students who finish reading "The Hunger Games" or "The Fault in Our Stars" and are looking to become engrossed in another captivating text. These modern novels move them, not only because they express a depth of human emotions and allow adolescents to practice empathy and perspective building but also because they are written in a language they can decode to find those meanings. The graphic adaptations of "The Odyssey" by Gareth Hinds will provide the familiar "new" look and language of their favorite young adult books but carry the history and foundational literary themes and motifs that widen their current ideas about literature.

My Project

My students need a class set of the Gareth Hinds graphic novel adaptation of The Odyssey. "The Odyssey" is an essential text in the Western literary canon and is frequently taught in schools. One of the arguments against teaching the canon is that it is too distant from our 21st century students' lives, however, Gareth Hinds, a predominate graphic artist, makes these texts accessible and exciting for a new generation while allowing students a chance to study the marriage of the textual and visual arts in experiencing these stories for themselves. As part of our literacy class, we would explore the literary qualities of the graphic novel, including how the art itself tells a story. Then, students would have a chance to develop their own graphic adaptation of a Greek myth that they choose.

One of the most powerful things that schools can do is to excite young readers to learn about our past through stories.

By giving students access to graphic adaptations of "The Odyssey" and "King Lear," my students will be able to learn about artistic techniques used in graphic novels as well as get chunks of the original stories to analyze for literary qualities. This will hopefully encourage students to confidently approach and enjoy future canonical texts they will encounter in the future.
