My Students

On a typical day in my classroom, we utilize technology for picture-taking, data collection and presentations. We often head outdoors and design our own experiments. Thus far this year, we have communicated our results with live presentations, collaborative Google docs and videos!

Our inner city school is full of curious, vibrant learners!

Because many of our students have economic struggles at home and/or language barriers, hands-on techniques work very well for them. Being able to design and create their own experiments to apply science concepts makes learning accessible, meaningful and rewarding for all of us. Using STEAM education as our model, we utilize our whole curriculum. I love the way our students genuinely care about helping each other to succeed, and give themselves and each other permission to be who they are becoming. Collaborative work allows them to support each other, hands-on science makes it real, and technology lets us use the world as our classroom. These students often do not have access to basic school supplies, let alone their own technology. Thank you, in advance, for supporting our students' futures!

My Project

My students will utilize the iPod cases when using our classroom iPods within and outside the classroom in order to do field research. The iPods will help them to take pictures, get GPS coordinates, collect data, make videos of their results, do web research, identify plants and other organisms, access their online documents, have a calculator in hand and more. The lab supplies will enable them to put their hypotheses to the test as they practice experiment design, data collection, and making conclusions.

A co-worker and I were each given 2 classroom iPods (which we share) because we volunteered for an NSF-funded study about increasing student success by increasing technology in the classroom.

Safe-guarding this equipment with protective cases will allow us to use them for years to come. Having plenty of good, working lab supplies will allow us to design experiments and cut down on the frustration of not having what we need, or enough to go around.
