Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning, we start off our kindergarten day with a chant in both English and Spanish: "We are friends. We are very smart and we want to learn. We are writers, readers, scientists, mathematicians, and artists." Our classroom community is a safe space where all children develop an identity as a learner who works in collaboration with his/her peers.
We are a science focus, dual immersion school with a strong community of parents, teachers, and administrators who work closely to ensure that all of our students are learning.
Ninety percent of my students are Latino (mostly immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala), five percent are African American, and five percent are Asian. Ninety-five percent receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students enter kindergarten eager to learn and curious about the world and each other. However, many of them also enter kindergarten with significant, emotionally traumatic experiences related to the effects of poverty and immigration. Most enter without significant pre-school experiences.
My Project
This year many of my students will be starting school for the first time in a totally new context. I want to make sure they have all of the supplies they need to engage in meaningful learning at home. We will not be learning in person for at least the first month but I still want to be able to provide my students with developmentally appropriate hands-on instruction that supports their literacy development in authentic culturally responsive ways. In order to do this, I need materials that they can engage with and access in their own homes.
