One of the fastest growing careers is graphic design. Providing these graphic design tablets for my students will unlock creative thinking and provide an opportunity to develop a skill related to computers and technology. By allowing them to create their own designs, the opportunities are limitless.
My students are awesome!
They are typical 15-18 year olds who are still trying to find their place in the world. They are faced with so many external issues outside of the school environment, it is often difficult to learn. Most of my students live in very rural, small towns and are bussed in to a community school. Almost everyone receives free or reduced lunch. Very few of my students have a computer at home or Internet access outside of school, which makes it difficult to study at home. However, they are fighters. They want to beat the odds and become successful citizens in the community. Most importantly, they want to graduate high school. Graduating high school is a major accomplishment for many of them.
My students need 2 graphic drawing tablets to create digital art, 1 digital camera, 1 digital recorder to learn how to use digital technology as a marketable skill. In this class, my goal is to expose my students to all things digital. Instead of using a computer to surf the net to find pictures to use, students learn the basics of digital photography, scanning, and basic photo editing skills in Photoshop. IT students record and edit their own videos and learn how to put them into a PowerPoint or web page. IT student are taught to use digital microphones to make audio recordings and also learn how to edit the audio clips and add fun sound effects to alter their voice. Drawing tablets are another exciting piece of digital equipment that IT students learn to use. Drawing tablets allow the students to turn their pencil drawings and random doodling into digital art.
This resource will greatly improve the availability of technology resources in our computer lab.
By providing theses graphic design tablets, we are providing an opportunity for my students to learn a marketable skill that may spark interest in a career in graphic design. Some career paths include graphic design, animation, architecture, engineering, web developers, etc. I am confident that this tool will prove to be an invaluable tool to help engage students to learn something new.
