This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The speech at the end of the book "Wonder" asks students to not only be kind, but to be kind beyond what is necessary. By donating to this project, you are living one of the main lesson of the book!

I teach in one of the lowest poverty neighborhoods in the South Bronx.

Students are surrounded daily by inadequate role models, and have very low reading levels and a lack of interest in reading. Although we practice independent reading and students have improved in levels, most of my 7th grade self contained class is reading below a 4th grade level independently. My students really struggle with finding high-interest books to read that they can relate to and learn from. Our library is located far downstairs and students do not visit it regularly and are not encouraged often to read at home. I have experienced, however, that when we read as a class my students are very interested in the text. As a result, I'd love to be able to practice this with them during our independent reading time for 30 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday to help them realize that reading can be fun, and that it is important to learn from books.

My Project

I am requesting 20 copies of the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio to encourage students to fall in love with reading and improve fluency. If we were granted this class set of books, we could read together and students could meet IEP goals and improve reading skills by following along with a text that is at an appropriate instructional level for them (5th grade). By the end of the year, they need to improve on reading comprehension, fluency in oral reading, providing evidence to answer literal and inferential questions, and mostly develop a love of reading to help drive their progress forward. Using various materials to help summarize, ask questions, and discuss different ELA elements of the book, we will hold a class literature circle every Tuesday and Thursday. I will be able to help them practice all of the necessary ELA elements we teach through class activities using a high-interest book such as "Wonder." I'm hoping and betting that my class will fall just as in love with this book and will learn as much from it as I did.

This will change my students' lives because the experience of reading "Wonder" and learning from a character who exhibits such strength and kindness regardless of his own disabilities is something I hope they will carry with them throughout their lives.

This will also help to improve my classroom because we can read a long-form text together and students can practice reading just one book and completing it, especially in an environment with no additional funding to purchase book sets.
