Busy little bodies are abound in my kindergarten classroom. In between literacy stations and math groups, the children are moving and exploring and most importantly learning through play.
With the Common Core standard of reading, the new assessments, and the push for technology; outdoor exploration has decreased.
Young children need to experience nature first hand and not through a screen. They love to find bugs, pick dandelions, collect pebbles and make sense of the world around them. We are one of five kindergarten classes in our school with roughly 300 students. Our school is situated on a hill with lots of wooden areas behind us. The children are compelled by the woods and want to explore.
My Project
I have been working to plan a weekly trip into the woods called "Into the Woods Wednesdays" that will incorporate math, literacy, science and social studies while also reaching the children's curiosity and senses. With the rain suits, tarp and outdoor thermometer we will be able to keep up with our routine even during inclement weather. The children will learn about weather and how to use a thermometer. They will learn about dressing properly for rainy and snowy days. Most importantly, they will be able to explore the woods, question and wonder, experiment and care for nature.

Richard Louv speaks of the importance of nature in childhood and beyond. He talks about how nature experiences increase attention, creativity, and problem solving skills while reducing stress.
