Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Can you walk into a room/party/store and ask a question, tell a joke, or make a comment anytime you want? Not all of my students can. My students all have some degree of hearing loss and communicate using sign language. Early childhood is a vital time for learning language so that is what we do.
I have a classroom of energetic, enthusiastic, and loving preschool-aged deaf and hard of hearing students, and several hearing friends who are play and role models.
My school is located in a predominately low-income large school district in Illinois. Our building is all early childhood students who qualify for school district preschool for a variety of reasons.
The most important time for language development is between birth and five years old. My students are 3, 4, and 5 years old and we focus on language every day. We talk, giggle, and sign throughout the day at school. Most of the time they don't even realize they are learning.
10% of deaf children are born to deaf parents. That means that 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents of whom most do not know sign language. It is estimated that about 10% of those parents learn sign language. My students want to communicate with everyone around them because they have so much to share. These resources will help them do so.
My Project
Having a classroom iPad will help my deaf and hard of hearing students develop communication skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It will give them the opportunity to have access to language that they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to benefit from. There are limitless apps that my students will benefit from including: picture books told in sign language so they have access to a story in their first language, vocabulary flash cards to build language, communication boards to express wants and needs to a variety of people, sign language dictionaries, games for practicing speech sounds, listening activities to improve auditory skills, and conversation starters to help them communicate with other children. We are also requesting an iTunes gift card to help us get started purchasing these interactive and beneficial apps. But don't forget that we are 3, 4, and 5 years old, so we really need an Otterbox case to keep our new iPad protected.
Please consider making any donation to help my students develop and refine their communication and language skills to ensure they are productive and satisfied children and adults.
This iPad is for them and the iTunes gift card and case will make sure the apps are exactly what they need and the case will ensure they can have full control of the device without worrying about damage.
Please help me to help my students develop communication skills to communicate with friends, family, and each other.
