Indoor Recess Blues

My students need to have some activities such as Clue, LEGOS and Goldie Blox during indoor recess.

My Students

My students need to be able to get up and move around. Sitting still all day is not enjoyable for anyone, especially growing, full of life 9 year olds. I want them to be able to still move around during recess even when it is cold or raining outside. School should never be a "mindless" task.

My students come from a low-economic background.

Our district includes low-income housing, government housing and the homeless shelter. They are some of the sweetest, funniest children you will ever meet. They are intelligent and, often times, wise beyond their years. I could never imagine working at another school. They sometimes are forced to grow up faster than they should have to. They are constantly making me laugh and sometimes I have to catch myself from getting off task because they want to tell me a hundred different stories all of the time.

My Project

I want to be able to allow them some "break" time that is constructive. I have noticed that a lot of my students do not know about the simple pleasures in life. Sure, they know about the newest Xbox games and iPhone apps, what child doesn't? However, having to use your mind to create something? That is something they do not get to do often. I don't want recess to feel like such a waste of time, yet it still needs to be fun. Learning simple skills like "following directions" when you put something together is a life skill everyone needs to know. Using context clues and reasoning out choices is also a life skill. I think that the Lego sets, Goldie Blox activities and the Clue board game will definitely teach those things. I want to encourage my students to be kids and still enjoy recess, even if it is inside.

Having these items will allow my students to have other options for their "free" time besides watching movies or playing games on a computer.

It will let them move around and interact with each other in a positive setting. It will allow them to use their minds with reasoning and logic skills, without them even knowing they are learning! (Don't let the secret out...learning can be fun!) These items will improve the atmosphere of mindless movie watching during indoor recess. Let them be kids!
