My Students

In 5th grade, we are beginning to think about the future and refer to what it is we want to do with our lives. It is vital that my students are introduced to a wide variety of rich texts to assist them in understanding the world around them. Nonfiction texts will accomplish this task.

When you enter our classroom, you will see children who long to be at school (away from some of the hard times they face at home).

School is an escape for many of my students, so providing them with the very best in order to help them reach their potential is my top priority. With a large focus on being College and Career Ready, I want my students to have the same opportunities to compete for top jobs in the future. Preparation for this begins at a young age, and I feel as though 5th graders are beginning to step outside their own personal lives to discover new people and places. Being in a poverty stricken area, my students are not exposed to literature at home and school is there only opportunity to make these new discoveries.

My Project

Through the use of nonfiction texts, my students will finally have the opportunity to read about real events and subjects on their reading level. Students will have the opportunity to read these nonfiction magazines and leveled readers on a daily basis, as they will be housed in our classroom library. All 5th graders (90 students) will have access to these materials each day during reading class and intervention. They will use these new nonfiction texts to discover more about the world around them, as well as how to Close Read nonfiction, which is an important skill.

My hope is that my students will begin to fall in love with nonfiction through more choice options.

In addition, I want students to have the ability to learn about various topics that interest them, as I know they will become engaged in reading texts that are relevant! With this, I know my students' Lexile levels will increase, so they will become deep readers and thinkers. This will help each child make it one step closer to becoming College and Career Ready!
