If School Supplies Could Grow on Trees...

My students need desperately most of the basic school supplies. When we started the school year, only one parent brought a couple of pencils. I have been purchasing school supplies with my own money. Supplies were also provided by the generosity of some families that have donated plenty of school supplies that lasted for a couple of months. At this time, we need crayons, pencils, notebooks, dry erase markers and many other supplies. I also would like to provide my students with two literacy center activities that will help them to create sentences and practice consonant blends and digraphs.

My Students

I work in a Title I school. My students live in extreme poverty and many of them have their utilities turned off daily and live with foster parents. I love them dearly. They are enthusiastic students and they are all unique in their own ways. My school supplies' closet is totally empty.

All of my students are economically disadvantaged students who have a very difficult time with succeeding in school.

Everyday I do my best to listen to my disadvantaged students because they need a strong relationship with a trustworthy adult in order to succeed am extremely careful about the school supplies I expect students to purchase because I know their parents don't have the funds to buy anything but food. Most of them don't know when their next meal will come from or how long they will have heat, water, and electricity before it is shut off again. I dream of a classroom well supplied where they will feel that all their needs as students are met.

My Project

I know that my students will greatly appreciate to have crayons to color their projects and dry erase markers to practice their handwriting skills. They love to work using dry erase markers. Kindergarten students should no be deprived of the right to use brand new school supplies just because their parents can not afford them. The use of hands-on learning materials and engaging literacy center activities in the classroom have a direct and positive impact on students' achievement and future success in school and in life.

Ninety percent of families in my school cannot provide the school supplies students need to succeed in school.

Our school does not have the resources to fill the gap envision to be able to tell my students, "There will always be a pencil, a crayon or any school supply here for you. Don’t ever worry about asking me for any school supply. I have hundreds of them for you to use". Please help my students to have their first unforgettable learning experience that every student deserves.
