My Students

Kindergarten students spend a lot of their instructional time during the day learning to read. They are always excited by this new challenge and their accomplishments, but I never see as much excitement as when I pull out my old Dr. Seuss books. They love the pictures and fun words to try!

My students are so happy to be at school and give it their all.

School is a safe and fun place for them. Most of them come from low income families and do not have many books of their own at home. We are a Title One school and try to provide as many interesting, memorable learning opportunities as possible.

My Project

I often have book baskets sitting out at student tables when students come at staggered times in the morning or when students finish work at different rates. These books will give them an interesting book to attempt, so they continue to learn during their "down" times...and they may not even realize it!

I always bring out as many Dr. Seuss books as I can track down each March to celebrate his birthday.

This year, my students have enjoyed them so much and continue to ask for them, even a month later. I always pull out my copy of "Green Eggs and Ham" that my parents gave me when I was 4 years old and tell my students how I would practice it over and over to get it right. I loved that book! I want to instill that same love and joy and accomplishment in my students.
