Do you remember as a child, being able to dress up like many different characters! One day you were a fireman, the next a doctor. The possibilities were endless and the real life social skills you gained were numerous! My students don't have this advantage. No costumes are available for us to use.
My precious students are 4-year-old special needs students (developmentally delayed, autism spectrum, etc.) and are just learning how to pretend.
In our classroom, many goals are met in this center, many new language skills are acquired, and much fun is had. Our Oklahoma school has been hit hard by budget cuts, and there just are no funds for costumes! For my preschoolers, Play is their work!! Playing in costume opens endless possibilities!
My Project
Putting on a bright red fireman's coat and hat, a blue policeman's uniform, a doctor's coat and more. Just imagine the endless possibilities of social play and language skills to be acquired! My little preschoolers, taking on different roles, taking turns being the doctor or patient. When you are in costume, it just becomes more real!
My students are just learning social skills and developing language skills.
Pretend play is such a crucial part of learning these skills! In addition turn-taking, role-playing and acquiring print knowledge are vital skills for my special kids. These costumes will be used year after year by many students, all of whom love nothing more than deciding what they want to do when they grow up, then pretending they are there!
