Hey Edison, Follow Me! - A STEM Robotics Project

Help me give my students a set of 10 Edison programmable robots so that they can learn how to code and problem solve like real engineers and computer scientists.

My Students

GRIT...if you ask any one of my 5th graders what I hope they will learn this year, it is just that- GRIT. Grit is the ability to persevere when challenged, continue to try even after failing over and over, and embracing mistakes. These kids do that, and more, each and every day.

In our classroom, we don't let hard work stand in our way; we embrace it.

We know that making mistakes is part of our journey. These fabulous 5th graders come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds each facing numerous challenges each day. Yet, somehow they are able to leave everything else at the door and impress me every day.

I am so proud of these hard hard-working kids, I can't wait to see what creations, discoveries, and inventions are in store in for their future.

My Project

My mission is to prepare students for the future jobs of the 21st century; positions that have yet to be invented. In order to meet this challenge, I need to provide students with the opportunity to collaborate, problem solve, invent and persevere though hands-on learning and all the while having fun.

With the funding from this project, I will be able to add robotics to our school STEM makerspace and teach students valuable coding, engineering, and real-life problem solving skills that are essential for their future.

The Edison robots that will be purchased through this project are capable of being programmed to solve all sorts of "challenges" by either following lines drawn on paper or through more complex computer coding. The Edisons are compatible with LEGO bricks which makes them all the more fun and adds even more possibilities for more challenging engineering tasks. These robots make teaching computer science and engineering fun and exciting for student of all ages. This project will help equip our kids with the skills that they need to succeed in school and beyond.

By the time students leave 5th grade they will have made an unconscious decision as to whether they will pursue science and engineering courses in the future. My hope if for all students at our school to leave having been exposed to, and having fallen in love with computer science. With the funding of this project, and with your help, I will be able to begin to meet this challenge. Our students will leave our school better equipped to meet the demands of the future.
