Help us use Makerbot Printer to prepare CPS students for job

My students need a Makerbot 3D printer to be better prepared for tech/manufact. jobs that have openings and no skilled employees to fill them. We would do basic I.D. work

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a fairly new tech program (1 old lab, 2 carts of newish laptops) & is looking to make a art/tech a central pillar of our daily mission. We see student performance dropping/plateauing in both creativity and in mathematics and know the key to success is supporting one with the other.

My students range in age from K-8th Grade.

They come from a predominantly urban, low-income, Hispanic background and all live in a neighborhood on Chicago's southside. We have a large ELL/bilingual population that embraces the arts very early on in their education due to the universality of the arts as expression/communication. Students are also extremely active in extracurriculars - participating in a variety of sports, music clubs, craft clubs, student council, etc. We are lucky - in recent years - to have a very active, supportive community of parents and business partners that keep our students engaged and keep our buildings and surrounding property safe. Our teachers are dedicated, optimistic, and welcoming of new challenges and technology - often working tirelessly on grants for additional funding and opportunities for students. While the school building may be dated and somewhat poorly laid out, the facilities are wonderfully maintained, supplied, and utilized by all involved.

My Project

The Makerbot 3-D Printer will be used in both the Visual Art and Technology classrooms to further the curricula already in place. Students will learn how everyday things work and build parts for small yet functional simple machines (gears, pulleys, knobs, etc.). Whenever possible, the projects geared for the Makerbot will be catered to fit with the topics being discussed in the core subjects - particularly the sciences. Imagine exploring the human body while actually designing and printing parts of the skeleton or organs. Imagine designing your own rocket while discussing the actual science that went into the moon landing. The possibilities are endless. Students will be encouraged not just to replicate but also to imagine (new car designs, new toys, new furniture shapes, etc.) There will certainly be a great deal of learning on the part of teachers to make sure each of us are ready for the task of operating and maintaining of Makerbot - a task we eagerly welcome.

This project will make a difference by giving students tangible evidence of their technology learning and by boosting confidence alongside performance.

Everyone at Lee School genuinely believes that it is our duty to prepare students not just for high school but for their lives beyond H.S. While not all will go on to college or possibly even complete H.S., we can and should still prepare them for creative fabrication/manufacturing/Industrial design jobs that many students aren't even aware exist
