Remember that feeling when you came up with an idea, designed it, built it, troubleshooted the problems, and then finally succeeded? In honor or National Day of Making, we want to build a makerspace in my classroom so that my students can have this experience.
My continuation school students have had bumps and obstacles on their road to their high school diplomas.
These difficulties have caused many of my students to have a lack of confidence in their abilities to have a successful life.
My students have a wide-range of skills and interest, but lack the belief in themselves to take on projects outside of their comfort zone. They are great kids and I would love to open their minds to the fact that there are more opportunities out there than they think there are.
My Project
I am requesting the materials to create a makerspace in my classroom to support my new elective class called 21st Century Technology.
To stock our makerspace, we are asking for hand tools, soldering irons, circuit kits and components, glue guns, arduino microcontrollers, conductive thread, rechargeable batteries and books to support our learning about making, 3D modeling and printing, programming, electronics, and wearable technology.
Using these materials, I will lead my students through a variety of project modules where they will learn the basics and have hands on experience with building things including 3D modeling and design, 3D printing, soldering, electronics, programming, and wearable technology. As a culminating activity my students will design and complete a project of their own, such as writing an app or building a robot.
This project will improve my classroom because it will allow us to have the tools and materials necessary to take on a wide range of projects that help my students develop 21st century skills.
This will allow my students to participate in the Maker community, to learn skills that are transferrable to college and career, as well as to realize that they are capable of more than they think they are.
