Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Seeing is believing! Try telling a five year old that a caterpillar grows up to be a butterfly and get ready for a 30 to 1 debate.
My 30 kindergarten students along with another class of 30 have teamed up to learn science.
And boy are we excited! These kids have not been exposed to much of nature in our concrete neighborhood. Beyond our school walls where the parks are few and not really safe, the kids stay inside playing video games and watching TV. They need exposure to the beauty in nature to realize there is more out there.
My Project
We want to give our students the love of science through the miracle of a caterpillar's metamorphosis to a butterfly. I can already imagine their faces and am eagerly looking forward to curious questions. For most, it will be their first foray into a glimpse of another world. If a caterpillar can grow into something so spectacular...what's to stop them?
I have no doubt that these kids will enjoy our project, but it is so much more.
We want to empower these students to reach for the stars in every way possible. I think they need to see a firsthand example of how life changes for them to begin realizing that their lives will change, too. They can start learning now the things they will need later. What better beginning than their first school experience to create a life long love of nature and science?
