Have you ever seen a classroom full of students working furiously, excited about learning algebra? I've found the secret! Handheld Interactive devices for working responding. My kids are dying for the opportunity to explore the heavens with the new telescope and its accessories!
My students attend 1 of 34 of what our state has designated a "High Performance/High Poverty" school.
Additionally, our building and its contents were completely destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. As diverse as our city, our school is a Title I public school, where we work daily toward building a better future... one student at a time.
My Project
These handheld devices will allow my students to work interactively with me and each other through our classroom Promethean Board. Allowing students to experiment and work collaboratively with their teacher and peers improves their ability to construct a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics and science. The ActivExpression2 devices will allow us to view each others' responses to the guiding questions that assist in building new knowledge and deeper understanding. As students enter their answers, the teacher and peers are able to provide instant feedback for the best understanding of the material. We will use the telescope and its accessories during the many evenings where we have events for teaching and learning and night with students and families in my classes.
In today's fast-paced world, timing is critical.
This project is vital to fostering the collaboration and attention to detail that are essential in a society driven by mathematics and science. As the students in my class become better thinkers, they will have a greater chance of succeeding in a world that may otherwise close its doors to children from low-income backgrounds. In addition, the telescope will open new worlds (literally) to them. Future rocket scientists? astronauts? engineers?
