Ever used a computer that is as old as you? That's what my students do every day. Imagine pushing the button to search the web and waiting a full minute before the site appears... This lack of technology is impeding our learning.
In an area of town where gunshots aren't unusual, my students show up at school every day ready to learn about all the wonderful things in the world.
We use our class blog to practice reading and writing skills daily, but the slow speed of the computers eats up our time. We work together cooperatively and get excited about learning. So far this year, we've created a bin and learned about worm composting and made s'mores in our solar ovens! The students have produced digital photo projects and learned so many concepts and new words that I am inspired by their excitement. All of this requires access to technology resources and books to deepen their understanding and increase their background knowledge.
The 2 Nooks will give my class access to millions of books and memory enough to work with the photos they've taken to produce writing pieces to communicate their learning. Being able to take the computer with them will give them a chance to research all of the things they wonder about in our Outdoor Classroom. Apps that are available on the NOOK will give my students a chance to mess around with games and improve their fluency with math facts and reading speed. Listening to their own voices digitally recorded will allow them to correct themselves as they prepare for Reader's Theaters. Besides all of these great educational uses, the NOOK will be fun and get my class even more engaged in the content.
In a part of the world where access to technology usually means video games with guns, the NOOKs will allow my students to view their world through a different lens.
They will have a chance to learn and apply their learning to their environment in new ways with this portable technology.
