My Students

Scholars at our school are developing a love of reading and almost none of them have read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies!

Our school is an elementary school in Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood.

While the University of Chicago is less than a mile away, our school, and our students' homes, are a world apart. Washington Park is among the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago. Between 1950 and 2010, the student population declined from 57,000 to 12,000. The median income in Washington Park is less than half that of the city of Chicago as a whole. Single-parent families are the rule, not the exception. Gang violence within a block of the school is commonplace, and for our older kids, a fact of everyday life. Our school serves 431 students in grades K-8, 99% of whom are African-American, and 100% of whom are low-income. Last year, our school student growth was far above the city average in math and reading, and our third graders showed the most ISAT reading growth of any school in Chicago. However, our work is far from finished.

My Project

Every Wednesday, scholars who have exhibited good behavior all week will have the option of attending "Wizard Wednesday" in my class. Scholars will follow along individually in their copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone while teachers read aloud to the whole group. Hot cocoa will be served.

Read aloud is an excellent way to build literacy skills in a fun, inclusive environment.

Having individual copies of the book enhances this, providing children the chance to learn new vocab more effectively, to strengthen their concepts of print, and to actively engage in an otherwise-passive activity.
