My students need an eye catching and engaging selection of books, including individual titles and themed collections. They love to read and explore new topics, and the selected books are the perfect hooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
We read to know that we are not alone. -C.S. Lewis
My students started their 5th grade year far below grade level, discouraged by reading and in need of support. Guided Reading groups have proved to drastically boost individual reading levels. My students need to work together to grow.
My 26 students and I live in a border town of South Texas where English is the second language of most residents.
The majority of my students have been in a bilingual education program since they began school in pre-k. Unfortunately, this has created a gap for 88% of my students who have failed to master reading, writing and speaking in both English and Spanish. On average, my students started their 5th grade year on a 2nd-4th grade reading level. We are working hard each day to close the gaps in their education. This proved true on a recent benchmark of my students reading growth. Most students grew almost 2 years in just the past 6 months! I believe that guided reading groups will provide the final push my students need to be on the proper reading level for the first time in their lives. I have 26 eager and motivated students dedicated to close these life changing gaps. We just need the books.
My Project
I am requesting multiple copies of books I know my students will love to read. Books like The Boxcar Children, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Judy Moody books will engage my readers. I plan to use these materials in guided reading groups in which my students will be able to work with myself and their teammates to fully comprehend the text and grow as a reader. I am also requesting an assortment of different series that will allow my students to read independently about topics that catch their interest.
I only have 3 months left to make sure that the literacy gaps in my classroom are closed before sending my 26 students off to middle school.
We are working everyday to take huge steps to close these gaps. With the books your donation will provide, I know they will be excited to attend school each day with high hopes of learning something new to make them a better reader.
