Do you remember how you learned to read? You were probably in a desk, right? I teach students to read in small group at a table so they can learn at their pace and level. They learn reading and comprehension strategies collaboratively with 5 or 6 peers who are at the same level.
My small town has one public school corporation where I teach third grade.
My students come to school eager to learn, which is amazing considering the daily obstacles many of them face. In our school corporation, 54% of students are on a free or reduced lunch program. They are also faced with pressures of standardized testing in third grade. Students who do not pass a specific statewide test are forced to repeat the third grade. This is such a heavy weight on the small shoulders of a nine year old.
My Project
Having a kidney-shaped table for teaching reading is important to engage students, and create a positive learning environment. The half moon shape of the table allows students to sit in their own space, but also see and hear other students at the table. One of the most beneficial parts of the table is how the teacher can easily work one-on-one with any student at any time. I would not have to move to reach a student. This is perfect for doing quick assessments, checking comprehension, or listening to students read. Students will be able to focus on the lesson because their eyes are not directed at other students. They are all facing the teacher and will be ready to learn.
This simple piece of furniture would make such an amazing impact on my class.
Guided reading is one of the most important times of the day in third grade. Not only can we use it for guided reading, but we will also be able to use it for center work, independent reading time, group project work, and much more. Students do not learn best at their desks anymore. Data proves that small group learning is so much more beneficial than whole group learning. Help us become stronger readers this year!
