Hearing a story is a magical spell for any reader. Listening centers in classrooms enable students enjoy listening to audiobook selections because they provide a "voice" for the novel they are reading in class.
My students are hungry readers who crave more than just books.
They love to read! To help further their cravings for books and reading, I want to incorporate a listening center in my 4th grade classroom. Research has demonstrated how important listening is in building a reader's life...why wouldn't I want to enable my students to have this too?
Our school is in a small town where the recent downturn of the economy has taken its toll. Many families struggle to buy basic school supplies for their students and our school's budget is down to the nitty-gritty...essentials only. As a relatively new teacher, I have limited resources that I can dedicate to my classroom as well.
My Project
This listening center will be utilized on a daily basis as part of our Daily 5/CAFE Literacy block. As my students utilize this listening center, their fluency and comprehension will increase.
This technology will allow for students to share a reading experience by listening to a common book and then having deep and meaningful discussions to reflect on the story.
Other students will be able to listen to text being read by a fluent reader, allowing for decoding, comprehension, and analysis of the story to be at the forefront of learning. The differentiation possibilities are endless with this potential listening center!
The audio books I selected will be a starting point to developing our audio library. I have selected audio books that will appeal to a wide taste of readers while incorporating ones that will challenge some readers and help boost others. The equipment will allow for many formats of audio books: CDs, tapes, mp3s, and iPods.
I don't want my students to be just another statistic.
By providing a listening center in our classroom, these children will have one more tool to help them become more than proficient readers - it will help fuel a life long passion for reading!
