My Students

"Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world." - Maria Montessori

Transforming children is par for the course in the Title I, K to 5 school where I teach physical education.

We have the largest enrollment of English Language Learners in any elementary school in our city. The challenges these kids face are amazing. Many are learning to speak English for the first time, even as they continue to develop and master their native tongues at home. There are over a dozen languages and dialects represented in our school. This, along with the long hours of school and afterschool program enrollments, severely limit time available for social interactions and the formation of meaningful friendships outside of school. In every grade, there are students with special needs and all of the children are working hard to meet our newly adopted and rigorous Common Core based curriculum. What is more amazing than all of this, however, is the dedication these students show day in and day out as they strive to reach all of their personal, social, and academic goals.

My Project

With all of these factors in play, it behooves the faculty to make sure that all instructional time is carefully planned for optimal delivery. In physical education, this means that I must make sure that these kids have the right tools to master the various age-specific skills needed to participate completely in our physical education curriculum. With young kids, like Kindergarten and first grade, the challenge with games involving throwing and catching is the limitations of their experience with hand eye coordination. A second set of catchsoft baseball gloves and balls will help give them a larger target to throw to, a greater surface area to receive incoming balls, and a soft ball that won't hurt on impact. These three factors should increase the likelihood that they will successfully throw and catch a ball with a partner. With success comes the desire to repeat an activity...and that will teach students to make healthy choices about fit and fun activities in the future.

By funding this project, you will be purchasing age and developmentally appropriate learning tools to help me instruct my youngest students in physical education.

This second set of catchsoft baseball gloves and balls will give these kids the right tools to learn to throw and catch. They will feel successful and continue to strive to live healthy and active lifestyles.
