Throughout the year, my students have studied countries like Egypt, China, India, Middle Ages Europe, and Greece. My wish is to take history out of the classroom and expose my kids to actual artifacts from places they've only read about before. They deserve a field trip with all the trimmings!
I am a homeroom teacher for a self-contained special education ninth grade classroom.
I teach my students English, Global Studies, and Living Environment in a curriculum modified for their academic delays. We are located in a high-need public school in NYC where all students qualify free lunch in our Title I school. These students are challenged by learning disabilities as well as emotional disturbance, but, instead of just giving in, my kids rise to the occasion and strive for the pride and security a high school diploma can bring! These young adults work hard to make more of themselves and conquer their academics!
My Project
Two weeks before the end of the school year, I'd like to treat my students to an educational field trip to see the art and history at the Metropolitan Museum of art. This will take the history out of the books and open my students' eyes to how intriguing and beautiful cultures of the past could be. Many of my students are visual learners and seeing the history will make as big a mental impact as hours of studying. This class trip would be very beneficial to my freshmen students following the Global Studies curriculum.
Because my school is Title I, my students won't need to pay for admission, but to make the trip truly memorable, I'd like them to have lunch at the Met's café and the joy of selecting personal mementos from the Metropolitan Museum gift shop.
I'd be so excited to show my kids the majesty and raw wonder of thousands of years of history!
Let them see what history looks like instead of simply reading about it. Make the past come ALIVE!
