Everyone remembers their high school prom. For many of us, this is one of the most cherished memories of our lives. For many of my students, prom is something that they have dreamt about since they were in sixth grade at my school.
I teach in the poorest Congressional district in the country.
While most of my students have a very clear vision of what high school prom should look and feel like (after all, is there any other event more featured in teen movies and the like?), for my students, this vision often remains merely a vision. With tight budgets and limited basic resources, prom funding is often prioritized last or worse, not a consideration. And yet, prom, much like graduation, should be a celebration for our students--an event that culminates one's high school experience.
Our school's graduating Class of 2014 is a cohort that is very dear to me. As a seventh year teacher at my school, I have, in a very real way, grown up with these seniors as an educator. When I first started teaching, these towering students were merely shy sixth graders, lost and confused in our school. When they transitioned into high school, I moved into high school myself. They are, in many aspects, my babies and my family.
My Project
My students deserve to have a prom like the ones they see in the movies. While educational policy makers often discuss urban education and the role that poverty plays in the lives of our students, for my kids, poverty isn't just a word that they hear in school or learn about. It is something that they live and have lived on a daily basis. For this reason, my students' grit and strength should be celebrated every single day--but at the very least, they should get their dream prom. Statistically speaking, the chance of my students being successful in school is dramatically reduced by the area in which they live, the color of their skin, and the inequity that exists in society today. For them to make it, for them to graduate from our rigorous school in seven years, and for them to have grown up into not only educated young people, but good young people, is a celebration to be remembered. And like many other proms in the country, my students should get a photo to commemorate the day.
Your gift to my school will bridge the gap that exists between wealthy and poor schools.
More importantly, it celebrates the hard work of my students and shows them that no matter what, prom is prom; it is exactly what you see in the movies no matter where you grow up. Leveling the playing field--that's the game changer.
