This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What are the most basic supplies in a classroom? A pencil and a composition notebook. My students have learned many things this year. Maintaining an interactive journal on the different academic subjects has proven to be an efficient and expensive strategy.

My young students live in a small community in a high poverty area which, due to the proximity to Mexico, allows them to maintain a connection with their roots and family members.

They all participate in the free lunch program and are English language learners. They face many challenges such as poverty, lack of motivation, and language barriers among other things. Although they are aware of the technology that surrounds them, most of them do not have access to a computer at home or to other technology sources. Some of the families in this community struggle to provide the basic materials needed in a classroom. This makes my students more appreciative of the materials we receive.

My Project

My students' composition notebooks have been used since the beginning of the school year to keep an interactive journal in the different academic subjects. Each student has a separate journal for math, reading, writing, and English as a second language. The students are running out of pages, and the school year is not over. We need 60 composition notebooks to continue completing reading activities, spelling sorts, illustrations, written responses, and other academic activities.

Composition notebooks are such a basic necessity in elementary education, and maintaining an interactive journal is a very efficient strategy.
