Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you envision a classroom that has many different types of instruments for children to play? Think about how exciting that is for the students! We currently have quite a few drums, hand percussion instruments, and a piano lab. An area we are lacking in is Orff instruments such as xylophones.

My students range from Kindergarten-6th Grade.

We are in a high poverty area and have many cultures represented. Quite a few of my students have difficulties speaking English, especially in Kindergarten and 1st Grade, as well as the students new to the United States. The kids really enjoy music class and the ability to express themselves in different ways than in their normal classroom setting.

My Project

One of the ways we can do this is by playing Orff instruments. In Orff Schulwerk classrooms, children begin with what they do instinctively: PLAY! Imitation, experimentation, and personal expression occur naturally as students become confident, life-long musicians and creative problem solvers. The Orff approach to teaching is a model for optimal learning in 21st Century classrooms. Students will be able to experiment, create, and learn a lot more by having a Soprano and Alto Xylophone to use. They will play along with songs that they already know, songs they'll learn, and songs that we will compose as a class.

Donations to this project will help to create more excitement for my students in music class.

They already look forward to coming to music, but with the addition of two xylophones to play they will not only be happier (in the words of one of my kindergarten students), they will be able to learn more about the melodic aspects of music.
