My Students
My students are a group of dynamic and curious individuals who thrive in hands-on , interactive classrooms. 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We also cater to a large percentage of ELL students and students who will be the first in their family to go to college.
My freshman Pre-IB Biology course allows our students , many for the first time, to see themselves as scientists.
Our school is an IB World school allowing students to gain college credit in high school which will save their families money in the future.
My Project
For the sixth year in a row students in my course will be using interactive science notebooks to help them master the standards and practice organization skills. These notebooks are my students' lab notebooks, textbooks, notebooks, and review books. We return to the notebooks throughout the year especially during STAAR review.
Interactive Science Notebooks have been one of the most effective instructional strategies in providing my students ownership of the material in Biology.
This year students will be taking Pre-IB Biology with a large focus on scientific writing and inquiry labs. We will use our notebooks to record our findings and respond to inquiry questions throughout the learning.
We create these notebooks by using standard spiral notebooks and gluing in lots of foldables that I often make using card stock. Students also staple or tape in any handouts they are given in class so that they can reference them when every they need them. The materials we are asking for with this project are the school supply items necessary to create our notebooks. We use plastic cover notebooks specifically because they are more durable and will last for the entire school year. Students will use the folders to hold items that do not fit well in their notebooks such as exams and large vocabulary trackers.
