Florida Kids are Prepared, Not Scared, for Hurricane Season
My students need a class set of supplies to make hurricane preparation kits for a usually anxiety-filled hurricane season here in Florida. These include radios, duct tape, and first-aid kits.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Do you remember storms when you were little? The feeling of terror during a bad thunderstorm or the anxiety that used to overcome you when there was a storm warning? Here in Florida, our kids deal with this every hurricane season. This year, I want my students to be prepared, not scared.
My second graders attend a fully public charter school in Florida.
Our school is founded on the principles of doing whatever it takes to individualize instruction and ensure that each child is getting what she or he needs to succeed. My students are engaged, inquisitive, and insatiably curious.
My Project
My class will use the donated resources during an emergency response unit in science. The students will create a hurricane preparedness kit with the supplies. Each student will be taught about the NOAA weather radio: how to use it and what the different warnings/watches mean. Students will learn about simple wound care/first aid by a local nurse and taught how to use the contents of their first aid kits.
The requested resources are only a small part of what it takes to be fully prepared as a family for these sometimes horrendous storms, but the NOAA radios alone can be enough to save the lives of entire families if a severe storm were to hit. In addition to creating the hurricane kits, students and parents will participate in creating family emergency plans, and will be rewarded at the end of the unit with a "Certificate of Readiness" from the FEMA website.
This project will help ease the hearts and minds of both parents and students alike this coming hurricane season.
While we hope it doesn't come down to it, this project could save lives. Don't get scared, get prepared!
