My son and his classmates celebrate their 10-year high school reunion this year. Imagine my surprise when I began teaching first grade and realized I had inherited their science textbooks--copyrighted in 1989! I'd love to get our science reading materials out of the 80's and into the 21st century!
I teach in a rural public school.
Our town has one small grocery store, a hardware store, a convenience store, two small family-owned restaurants, and not even one stoplight. We are at least 40 miles from the nearest supermarket, big-box store, or chain restaurant...let alone any type of museum or planetarium. Many of my students have never traveled much or had opportunities to see and experience things that other children have.
My Project
My students are budding readers who have a thirst for learning! They especially love learning about social studies and science. My students' first choice of books to read are the non-fiction books. Unfortunately, the books available to them in my classroom are limited, since I'm a fairly new teacher and am still trying to build my classroom library.
If I had the good fortune of obtaining funding for this project, I would use the books from this science library to enhance and add interest to my science curriculum. I would read aloud from these books to introduce or reteach the information. I would also make the books available for individual reading and exploring by the students by making them a part of our classroom library and by featuring them in special reading areas. These books would open up new worlds and ideas to my students, many of whom live a very simple lifestyle.
Science is such an important subject in our world of quickly-changing technology and fast-paced, global interests.
My students deserve better than the outdated curriculum of more than two decades ago. After all, my students are our future! What's best for us is giving them the best! Thank you for your consideration!
