My Students

Most of my students have not experienced as many hands-on science experiments as they need to fully understand the content for our subject. Being a new teacher it is hard to find materials for my students to experience these concepts. I want my students to see first hand the magic of science!

I am very privileged to be spending my year with a very caring, compassionate group of students.

Our school is closely related to the A+ initiative and we strive to incorporate arts and hands-on learning into our everyday classroom. This encourages not only my students but the entire student body to be naturally curious and to find interest in many things. While my students are very curious, few of them have the opportunity outside of school to exercise that curiosity. Many of my students are part of hardworking families that have other priorities to contend with. That is why my job is to be able to provide thought provoking activities to quench that thirst for new experiences during school hours.

My Project

My students need materials for labs, specifically Carolina Introduction to Simple Machines Kit and Introduction to Electricity for our 'energy and conservation' units, in our science classroom. The materials that have been requested are beginning lab kits. These will be used to introduce the students to two sections of a new unit in our science curriculum. Both will be used as introductory activities to spark interest for the students in areas that they are not familiar with. Most of the kits will remain for many students to learn! The first is a introduction to the transfer of energy through circuits. Students will work in small groups to be able to discover the power of electricity and complexity of circuits. The kit provides them with materials to create circuits and also to take that a step further and measure the efficiency of the circuits that they build using an ammeter. The second kit is an introduction to simple machines and their purposes. This kit introduces three of the simple machines that help us do our work more efficiently. The students, in small groups, will go through several test runs to measure the amount of force that it takes to move a specific object. The end result will prove the need for these machines.

As a new teacher I do not have the materials built up to be able to conduct many experiments.

Experiments are the backbone of science magic and being able to see how something works provides a better understanding of the content than could ever be learned from just a book or a demonstration. These donations are not only giving students a chance to play with these materials, but a chance for them to make lifelong connections to knowledge that could change their lives forever. (potential electricians or Electrical Engineers!)
