Technology is changing daily and many of my students do not even have a computer at home! The Kindle Fire will allow my students to become familiar with the many kinds of technology available as well as improve their reading skills and enrich their learning experiences.
The majority of our students come from low income families and receives free or reduced lunches.
Because our families are struggling to meet their basic needs, most of my students do not have any type of technology at home. Their faces light up any time they are presented with an opportunity to use any kind of technology at school and they are always so excited to go to "Computer Lab." Unfortunately due to our school being very crowded, we only get to go to the "Computer Lab" once a week for 40 minutes. This is the only time that each student gets to individually have computer time. In a world where technology is constantly changing and considered a basic necessity for almost any kind of job, I want to ensure my students have opportunities to experience different kinds of technology as well as meet their needs as readers with a wide range of reading levels and abilities.
My Project
A Kindle Fire will allow my students to see that technology can be used to learn in new and exciting ways. With hundreds of books being just a click away, my students will have no problem finding their "good fit book" (a book that is on their level and that interests them!). The Kindle Fire will also help them with their comprehension skills and promote fluency. Students who struggle with reading will benefit greatly from the text-to-speech feature. This is especially important for my ELL students. Students can work in small groups or independently to practice sight words, phonics, spelling, and all kinds of math skills. My lower level students will gain confidence in their success as readers. And my higher level students will constantly be challenged!
The Kindle Fire will allow me to meet all of my students' needs in a fun and interactive way.
I want to provide the opportunity for all of my students to experience technology while improving their reading skills and enriching their learning experience!
